![]() The Elephantmen series written by Starkings, has been compared (favorably) with movie Blade Runner. Hip Flask is a half-man, half-hippo detective and it’s set in a future with many other animal human hybrids. Comicraft wanted to use Marvel characters but they weren’t sure how to license it. Hip Flask was created as a way to showcase Comicraft’s font capabilities. The ongoing series Elephantmen from Image originally started as a comic called Hip Flask. Starkings currently letters monthly titles for Dark Horse including Conan the Barbarian and King Conan The Hour of the Dragon. ![]() He and his company went on to letter for all the major titles and comic book publishers. He was an early designer and user of computer fonts for comic book lettering. Starkings started the company Comicraft in 1992 to provide lettering and graphic design services for companies like Marvel and DC. Eventually he moved to the United States, New York and then California, to find more work as a letterer. ![]() He became an editor for many Marvel UK comic books like Death’s Head, The Real Ghostbusters, and the Doctor Who Magazine. After that, he lettered for Marvel UK’s Spider-Man Weekly and Transformers. ![]() ![]() Richard Starkings started out hand lettering for British comic books like 2000 AD and Warrior. ![]()
